Artist Reception: September 7, 6-9pm
In The Scheme of Grand Things at Art Cake, Dominic Terlizzi presents a group of large-scale paintings created on August 10, 2024 under the BQE in East Williamsburg. Accompanying these foot stamp paintings is a video documenting the process of their creation. A collection of stamp drawings and a mosaic painting lead viewers into the main gallery contextualizing the transformation of Terlizzi's painting process. Acrylic cast paintings made from found objects led to stamp drawings built from found symbols. These stamp drawings were then walked out in the snow last winter, increasing the incremental measurement of the stamp to the size of a foot. This has led to the foot stamp paintings you see in the galleries, created to Art Cake’s monumental scale.
This grand gesture is made one step at a time and diligently refers back to the artist’s sketchbook drawings. All works were stepped out on Saturday, August 10th, 2024 between 12 noon and 5 pm. Each tread is different and the assorted shoes used in these paintings are placed at the entry of the space like a shoe pile at the entry of a home.
Each iteration of Terlizzi’s image-making, including his cast mosaic paintings, stamp drawings, and foot stamp paintings have a portion of labor, material and texture in varying quantities. Throughout the shift of scale, images remain archetypal and symbolic. In the main room are two large figurative diptychs and two portraits. The back room presents oceanic themes with waves, a shell, a crab, and a bird.
