“My work is about understanding my own existence through introspection and existence as an object of its own.” —William Fleites
Jonathan Curran (b. 1996, White Plains, NY) is a multi-hyphenate artist currently working predominantly in textile and sculpture. This latest body of work grew out of witnessing the rising popularity of tufting machines on social media, where amateurs used a previously commercial tool to create rugs of pop culture references. Rather than using it for its expected usage as rug-making, Jonathan began exploring the technique as a medium for creating original pieces, drawing inspiration from nature and creating distinct color palettes for each artwork. This exhibition presents his first foray into the tufted paintings, playfully subverting our sense of negative space with added textures and inviting viewers up close with the perceived tactility of the works. Jonathan holds a BA in Architecture from Catholic University of America (Washington, D.C.) and is based in Brooklyn, NY.
