Beyond the Sky is an immersive audiovisual installation created by visual artist Simona Prives and sound artists Kyle Luntz and Ryan Vahey. It was first shown at Hot Wood Arts in Red Hook, Brooklyn, but was tragically destroyed in the fire on September 17, just four days after opening.
The fire destroyed the gallery and displaced dozens of artists and small businesses, deeply affecting a close-knit creative community built around collaboration and mutual support. Beyond the Sky uses animation, sound, and layered textures to create a changing, dreamlike environment. Life-sized, floor-to-ceiling projections move across multiple surfaces, while generative sound creates an experience that changes as you move through the space. The work plays with ideas of memory, uncertainty, and imagination, inviting viewers to experience a world where the past and future overlap and landscapes shift and change.
One year after it first opened at Hot Wood Arts, Beyond the Sky will return at ArtCake. This time, the loss of the gallery and the aftermath of the Red Hook fire become part of the work itself - a new layer of time and meaning.
We’re excited to bring the piece back to life and to welcome artists from the Red Hook community to experience it, reconnect, and come together again. Please join us on Saturday September 12, 6 - 9 PM ArtCake 214 40th St | 2nd floor | Brooklyn, NY 11232
